The President of the Federal republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has finally aired his voice over the Asup strike, While addressing chairmen of the Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics and Federal Colleges of Education in Kaduna during a special retreat disclosed that very soon, the Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor of Science (BSC) discrimination will soon be a thing of the past.
The President has set up a committee which is headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, to address the controversy of HND/BSc.
Also present in the retreat is the supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike. Acting Minister of Education, Wike said the SGF and members of the committee met, last week, with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) to resolve the dichotomy. Mr. Wike said that other demands about the strike had also been resolved. According to the education acting minister, the release of the White Paper on visitation panels to Federal Polytechnics and Federal Colleges of Education is being concluded at the Office of the SGF. A statement yesterday by Simeon Nwakaudu, the Special Assistant (Media) to the minister, said Wike advised the chairmen of the governing councils to deploy their requisite skills to resolve the lingering strike of the polytechnics. The minister also advised the striking unions to respond to the President's good gesture by resuming academic activities in their various academic institutions. According to Wike, whom we choose to quote directly, and here's his exact word: "Permit me to call on our lecturers to call off their protracted strike to enable academic activities begin in the polytechnics and colleges of education. Let us show understanding with the government and the challenges before it and call off the strike.
